EVERYTHING ABOUT MEMORY CARDS

Full HD, Ultra HD and other megapixel monsters? That means one thing above all: high writing and reading speeds and a high memory capacity. But how are the memory cards different? How do I find the right memory card out of the thousands out there? What can you actually do with the memory card?

Hama has the right memory card for you – for hobby/professional requirements, photography, videos, smartphones and action.

WHAT ARE SDHC AND SDXC CARDS?

And how are the memory cards different?

SD cards have since become the standard storage medium for photos and video recordings.
But there are various models of SD cards:

STANDARD SD CARDS

Maximum capacity of 2 GB

SDHC CARDS* (HC = HIGH CAPACITY)

Capacity from 4 GB - 32 GB

SDXC CARDS* (XC = EXTREME CAPACITY)

Capacity starting at 64 GB

* these can only be used with compatible terminal devices.

microSDHC AND microSDXC CARDS AT A GLANCE

The SD card’s little sister

Functions of modern terminal devices such as smartphones, tablets or action cams are best used with a lot of storage. But these devices do not come with too much storage.

The solution: Hama microSD cards for memory expansion. They guarantee a higher performance and faster data transfer rate, and plenty of space.

microSD cards are commonly identified using the same classes (Class 4, Class 10, Class 10) and versions (microSDHC and microSDXC) as for SD cards. All our microSD cards are available with or without an SD adapter.

microSDHC and microSDXC
Classification Reading rate Storage space
Class 10 22 MB/s 4 GB – 32 GB
Class 10 UHS-I 45 MB/s / 80 MB/s 8 GB – 64 GB
UHS Speed Class U3 UHS-I 80 MB/s 16 GB – 64 GB

EXTREME SPEED WITH COMPACTFLASH

More confusing abbreviation stuff: What do CF, UDMA and VPG mean?

CompactFlash, CF cards for short, are usually used in high-end SLR cameras. Professional photographers particularly value their unrivalled high reading and writing speeds. Cards that support UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) deliver the highest speeds. In this mode, you can achieve data transfer rates in the three-digit range.

Cards with the VPG 20 logo all come with a “Video Performance Guarantee”. This logo guarantees a video stream of at least 20 MB/s.

Reading rate Storage space
bis zu 9 MB/s 4 GB – 16 GB
bis zu 30 MB/S 4 GB – 32 GB
bis zu 90 MB/s 16 GB – 64 GB

WHAT’S MY MEMORY CARD TYPE?

Depending on whether you make professional recordings with a high storage capacity, limit yourself to a few picture on holiday, or prefer extraordinarily sensational action recordings, finding the right memory card for each activity is not so simple. Therefore, we have put together a small guide for you to find out which memory card is best suited for you.

Card Format Semi professional Professional
Are you an enthusiastic photographer and like to experiment? Are you a professional photographer and need a memory card that can handle everything?

22 MB/s

45 MB/s / 80 MB/s

80 MB/s / 85 MB/s
SDHC / SDXC 4 GB – 64 GB 16 GB – 256 GB 16 GB – 256 GB
microSDHC / microSDXC 4 GB – 64 GB 8 GB – 128 GB 16 GB – 64 GB

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THE MEMORY CARDS

32 GB of storage space – but will all the holiday pictures fit? The capacity specification is important, but we do not necessarily realise right away how much music, pictures and videos a card can ultimately hold.
Therefore, we have tested what you can store on our Hama memory cards for you (subject to average file size, terminal device and compression factor):

Memory Card Size MP3 12 MP (RAW / JPG) 20 MP (RAW / JPG) Full HD Video 4K video
